Degree Show Website

A collaboratively developed WordPress website designed to showcase the degree show through a cohesive, accessible, and professionally curated digital catalogue of student work.

Overview

This project involved a structured approach to task delegation across multiple collaborative teams, including poster design, photography, and the development of the website catalogue. My primary responsibility focused on designing and building the website, translating established visual concepts into a functional digital format. A key aspect of this process was adhering to the agreed brand guidelines, which informed decisions around layout, typography, colour, and overall user experience to ensure consistency across all outputs.

During the early stages, the project lacked clear direction, which made initial planning and task allocation more challenging. However, as the broader scope of the degree show became more defined and supporting materials were completed, it became easier to establish a coherent workflow. This allowed for a more structured and methodical approach, improving both efficiency and the overall quality of the final outcome.

Learning

A significant component of this project was developing an understanding of WordPress as a platform for building and managing a live website. Initially, the system presented a steep learning curve, particularly in relation to themes, page structures, and content management. Navigating these technical aspects required experimentation and problem-solving in order to effectively implement design ideas within the constraints of the platform.

Over time, the interface became more intuitive, enabling a smoother workflow and greater confidence in constructing and editing pages. This experience allowed me to successfully translate static design concepts into a functional, responsive website, while also developing practical skills in web design and content management that will be valuable in future projects.

Collaboration

As a large-scale, class-wide project, collaboration was central to the success of the outcome. The project required ongoing communication between multiple teams, as well as a shared commitment to maintaining a consistent visual identity across a wide range of deliverables. Coordinating input from numerous contributors presented logistical challenges, particularly when balancing overlapping responsibilities and deadlines.

Despite these challenges, the collaborative nature of the project strengthened my ability to work within a team, adapt to evolving requirements, and contribute to a unified result. It also highlighted the importance of compromise, clear communication, and collective decision-making when working on complex, multi-faceted design projects.
